Buena Vista knocks off Rankin in nail-biter

The Rankin girls basketball team had an unblemished record at 14-0 and were ranked No. 5 in Class 1A according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches when they went up against the Lady Longhorns on Tuesday in Imperial.

That perfect record stood no more after a collective team effort by Buena Vista that featured three of its players reaching double-digit point totals.

Kylie Dominguez scored a season-high 13 points while fellow juniors Mariana Sanchez and Melissa Rodriguez each scored 11 points in their team’s 52-49 victory.

“It was a very competitive game between two very good teams,” Buena Vista head coach Jose Martinez said. “The girls are just starting to get into a rhythm and look to continue to play hard!’

The victory continues the Longhorn’s winning ways since the girls cross country runners returned to the team after placing third at state in Class 1A. Buena Vista has a been 5-0 since they returned and now have a 5-2 record with a 2-0 district mark after Tuesday’s win.

Buena Vista went back and forth with Rankin the entire game as the team’s did not have greater than a two-point separation at the end of any quarter. The Longhorns trailed 19-18 after the first quarter before surging to a 34-32 halftime lead.

Mariana Sanchez and her cousin, Ireland Sanchez, were vital in securing a lead before the break. Ireland netted her team’s only 3-pointer of the game in the second quarter and finished with a team-best five points in the frame.

Mariana tallied four points in the second quarter and Rodriguez added three to help their team gain an advantage.

Both teams played tough defense and struggled offensively in the third frame with both team’s scoring game-low point totals in the quarter. Rankin outscored Buena Vista 7-6 in the third quarter to cut the Longhorns advantage to 40-39 going into the final eight minutes of play.

Dominguez closed out the game for her team with seven of her team-high 13 points coming in the fourth quarter.

Rankin sophomore Madison Jenkins led all scorers with 14 points. Senior Jelcie Tubbs added 13.

Buena Vista held the Red Devils leading scorer coming into the game, Emily Burger, who was averaging 23.1 points per game, to just seven points.

The Longhorns will travel to Comstock on Friday to play the Panthers.
