May is Older Americans Month. This is when the nation celebrates and honors older Americans. May is a time to recognize older Americans for their contributions, and provide them with information to help them stay healthy and active.

Older adults are at a much higher risk of unintentional injury and even death than the rest of the population. Unintentional injuries to this population result in at least six million medically treated injuries and more than 30,000 deaths every year. With a focus on safety during Older Americans Month, the Administration for Community Living plans to use this opportunity to raise awareness about this critical issue. By taking control of their safety, older Americans can live longer, healthier lives.

While Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Pecos County provides services, support, and resources to older adults year round, Older Americans Month offers an opportunity for us to provide specialized information and services around injury prevention. This information will help older adults take control of their safety and live longer, healthier lives.

Throughout the month, Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Pecos County will be conducting activities and providing tips on how to avoid the leading causes of injury. To learn more about Older Americans Month and how you can participate, contact me at Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Pecos County.

The Senior Celebration Program will take place Friday May 6 at the Fort Stockton Large Community Hall in Rooney Park. There will be speakers, games, informational displays, awards, booths, and a luncheon. Call the Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Office for more information at 432- 336-2541, or to register. This event is free.
