Veda D. Walker, 77, of San Angelo, Texas passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, surrounded by her family.
Veda was born on Sept. 16, 1945, in Decatur, Texas. On March 17, 1970, she married her husband Bruce, with whom she spent a few years as military wife in Germany and San Antonio. After he retired from the Air Force, they made a home for their family in Fort Stockton. They both worked hard to provide for their family, he as a truck driver, and she as a breakfast waitress. She loved to trade friendly barbs with her loyal customers who were always sure to follow her when she changed jobs.
She enjoyed making large home cooked meals. Everyone loved her chicken fried steak and her enchiladas. She always welcomed strays, whether two-legged or four-legged. Later, she moved to San Angelo to be nearer her adult children and her grandchildren. There, she took up quilting as a way to express her affection for her family through a craft she delighted in. Everyone in her family treasures her quilts, by which they'll continue to remember her and the warmth of her love. In addition to being an avid crafter, she took great pleasure in conquering each crossword puzzle to cross her path, while sipping her iced tea.
Veda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bruce Walker, and her brother Bobby Grue.
Survivors include her twin sister Leda Dulaney of Fort Stockton; her children, Randy Turney and wife Paula of Bedford, Texas; Robert Turney and wife Monica, of Cimarron, New Mexico, and Deanna Walker Taylor and husband Rodney Taylor of San Angelo; her grandchildren Nicholas Turney, Tamura Turney, Lawrence Dominguez, Garrett Turney, Sierra Turney, Matt Turney, Maggie Smith, John Taylor, Ben Turney, Taylor Turney, Stephen Taylor; and six great-grandchildren.
An open visitation will take Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023, from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in San Angelo. A memorial service will be scheduled in the future.
