Robert Huerta Pena, Jr., of Fort Stockton, Texas, passed away from this life on Feb. 16, 2021, at Odessa Regional Medical Center. He was born to Robert H. Pena, Sr., and Sally Salazar in Phoenix, Ariz., on March 4, 1945.

Robert graduated from Odessa High School in 1963. He joined the National Guard in Dec. 22, 1965, in Midland, Texas, and served until Dec. 21, 1971.

He married Rosea Chacon, and they had three children, Julie A. Pena of Fort Stockton, Brantley Pena of Stephenville, Texas, and Maribel Pena of Alpine, Texas. Robert had a son named Robert Scott Pacheco of Pensacola, Fla., by Lupe Pacheco, and a daughter, Nataly Pena and family from Mexico; four sisters, Alice Miller from San Antonio, Texas, Margie Mendoza and brother-in-law Frank Mendoza from Colorado City, Texas, Lora Pena Lites from DeSoto, Texas, Yolanda Conn (deceased) from Odessa, Texas; and brothers Mike Pena of Odessa, Carl Pena of Odessa, and Carlos Oyervidez of Lubbock, Texas.

Karan Heffelfinger was his long-time companion. Her family is Matthew A. Heffelfinger and Karen W. Heffelfinger, and two grandchildren Klary and Ryker from Lehi, Utah. Robert had numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Robert worked for Texaco as a pump operator before his retirement. Robert was an elder and member of the Presbyterian Church in Fort Stockton. He served the church as the food pantry director and coordinator for 11years.

Robert served the community as a 4-H volunteer with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension as a dog project leader. He was an active member of the Dinner Tonight healthy cooking club, the senior citizen center, and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension on healthy aging. Robert also served as a member of the Tres Rios Presbytery Mission Committee.

Robert earned his bachelors degree in square dancing. He enjoyed dancing, and traveling to London and Hawaii. In his retirement years, he assisted with Karan’s orchard.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents Robert H. Pena, Sr., and Sally Salazar.

The memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021, at First Presbyterian Church, 202 Oklahoma Street, Fort Stockton, TX 79735.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Stockton food pantry. Non-perishable food items would be greatly appreciated.
