The old saying goes “God threw away the mold when He made you.”

This saying was made for Patsy “Pat” Lee Barbee. A modern day West Texas pioneer and a self-taught Annie Oakley, she gave even the West Texas Game Warden a run for his money. She passed away peacefully on Aug. 25, 2023.

She was born on July 24, 1933, in Carrizo Springs, Texas. Her parents were Bryce Monroe and Jewel Marie Barker Cochran. She grew up and lived in Uvalde, Montel, Iraan, and Sheffield. She married James L. Barbee, whom she met in high school in Iraan. Together, they raised three children in Ozona.

She was a pioneer in so many ways. She was a self-taught golfing extraordinaire. She played golf all over West Texas. The family recalls her story of golfing in just dirt because back in those days, there were no fairways. Her love of golf helped to establish and better the Women’s Golf Association of her day. To describe her would be to say: a golfer, a fisherwoman, a water skier, a pilot, West Texas coyote hunter, the family seamstress, the best cook, and the family peace maker. She was anything but a “weak willed woman.” This was her go to catch phrase. Her life was full.

She is survived by her three children, Johnny Lee Barbee; Marla Dobson and her husband Mickey Dobson, and Sharron Spears, as well as her grandchildren Jennifer Barbee; Jillian Walker; Brian Barbee, Taylor Condit; Barbee Condit; Jody Priest, and Nelson Schauer. Additionally, she has 16 great grandchildren.

She is also survived by other close family members to include her sister in law, Janis Barbee, Eddie and Charlotte Bradford, and Jimmy Ray and Denise Barbee.

Funeral services will be entrusted to Preddy Funeral Home in Ozona. A graveside service will take place Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Ozona.

The family requests donations be made to the West Texas Boys Ranch in San Angelo In lieu of flowers.

Though the family grieves this chapter, they take comfort knowing that this West Texas gal would want her family and friends to know: When I look behind me at the years gone by Everything makes sense, all the lows and the highs Time is a teacher, every loss and every glory At the end of my life, a perfect story Though this loss feels like a low, it is the culmination of a perfect story.

Pat “Gigi” Barbee will be missed but never forgotten. **Songwriters: Kate York, Ross Copperman, Madeline Edwards, Our Gigi She loved her family and food Always cooking for the nightly dinner guests When there was nothing left to be pursued She was always last to sit and rest.

Her life was filled with joy and work The apples of her eye Joining her each holiday was a perk Now she joins her beloved Jimmy in the sky.

Hunting coyotes was her skill And working on the ranch Was a daily thrill She was the family’s olive branch.

Gigi’s legacy will live on In the greater family that is strong In their ears will be a song We will see you before too long.
