Fort Stockton celebrated Flag Day with landmark flag raising
It takes about 10 people to lower and raise the massive American flag that flies above Hilltop RV Park, a landmark visible for miles along Interstate 10 and one that owner Joe Hernandez believes is the largest American flag displayed along the interstate from coast to coast.
That flag took center stage Sunday morning as community members gathered at Hilltop RV Park to observe Flag Day, retire a weatherworn flag, and raise a new one in its place. The ceremony also included recognition from the Pecos County Historical Commission as part of the county’s America 250 initiative commemorating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
Members of American Legion Post 234 conducted the flag retirement ceremony, with Michael Pules leading the effort to respectfully lower and retire the previous flag, which had been damaged by months of exposure to the strong West Texas winds.
