Buena Vista’s Gabriela Sanchez led the Lady Longhorns to a state title in 2021 as freshman.

This year, the sophomore earned individual hardware at the state meet by cutting her time by 20 seconds from her previous performance on the grandest of stages.

Sanchez placed sixth at in Class 1A on Nov. 5 at the state cross country meet, leading her team to a ninth-place finish. The underclassman crossed the finish line of the girl’s two-mile race in 12 minutes 52 seconds.

Senior Ireland Sanchez placed 29th in her final cross country competition as a Lady Longhorn.

Miliana Mandujano was third on Buena Vista’s squad by finishing in 36th place and Kiara Corona rounded out varsity scorers with a 46th place finish.

The group had a team score of 180.

Miller Grove won the meet with a team score of 105 and Nazareth was runner-up with a team score of 107.

Taytum Goodman of Springlake-Earth won her third state title in the race and lowered her 1A state record time to 11 minutes 11.2 seconds.
