Prowlers end season with five-set defeat
Fort Stockton High School’s volleyball season came to an end on Tuesday in Andrews with a five-set loss (25-14, 26-24, 20-25, 20-25, 15-10) to the Mustangs, as the Prowlers ended the season with three straight losses – including a pair of five-set losses to finish district play with a 3-7 record.
In Saturday’s home finale against Monahans, Fort Stockton was dominating – initially - winning the first two sets. Then the visiting Loboes regrouped and won the next three to win the match in five. The 25-23, 25-14, 19-25, 20-25, 6-15 setback for Fort Stockton was the district championship for Monahans.
The first set of the match was tied five times before the Loboes pulled out to a 12-8 advantage. With Sophia Hernandez at the serve, the Prowlers cut it to 12-11 and eventually tied the game at 14 behind Angelina Aquirre and Aryanna Gonzalez. The game went back and forth before Monahans gained the upper hand at 22-20, but the Prowlers were able to rally for the 25-23 win.
The Prowlers were dominant in the second set, ending the game with a 9-2 run to win it 25-14.
Then the Loboes – sensing a Prowler sweep – regrouped in the third game and jumped to a 5-1 lead before the Prowlers regained their composure. Eventually tying the game at 6 before Sophia Hernandez grabbed a pair of kills for a 9-7 Fort Stockton lead.
Kills by Eliana Mata and Amaya Urias kept the game tied 15-all before Monahans surged to a 23-16 lead and won it 25-19.
Katheryn Mendoza, Aguirre and Urias kept the fourth set tied at 11-all before Monahans pulled away for the 25-20 win.
Smelling blood, the Loboes dominated the final set to win, 15-6.
Gonzalez recorded 30 digs in a spectacular defensive performance at libero; Alyssa Rangel had 22 assists and four digs, Mata 22 digs, 19 assists and seven kills, Hernandez 12 kills, 13 digs and four aces, with Urias putting down 10 kills, six digs and two blocks.
The freshmen fell 25-12, 25-15 and the junior varsity fell 25-15, 25-16.
Elina Montes has nine digs, Victoria Maldonado eight digs, Adamari Renteria six assists, four digs and two aces, and Leilani Enriquez four kills, a block and a dig.
Fort Stockton has now missed the postseason for six consecutive seasons and finished the 2022 campaign with a 20-18 overall record.
