4-H state food challenge qualifiers recognized
Three Pecos County 4-H students were recognized for their state-qualifying achievement at the Pecos
County Commissioner Court regular meeting on June 27.
Mikki Mandujano, James Garrison, and Bryon Garrison were the state qualifiers.
The students qualified for state by showing exemplary knowledge of nutrition and the ability to put together a meal without instruction in a 40-minute span.
Students were randomly given a food category and ingredient they need to use – similar to the Food Network show “Chopped.”
Each student competed in a local, county, and district competition in order to qualify for state.
“The objective of the program is they will learn knowledge and skill in nutrition and given a dish. The other objectives they learn is teamwork and public speaking skills,” Karan Heffelfinger said at Monday’s meeting. “
Each county employee at the meeting received an angel food cake dessert, which the students made at the state competition.
