Panthers' basketball concludes season against Seminole
Seven Panther seniors had their basketball careers come to an end on Feb. 15 at home against Seminole.
Fort Stockton faced off against the third-place finisher in their district in Seminole and a similar tale unfolded compared to the teams first meeting 18 days prior.
Seminole set the tone from the get-go and controlled the contest throughout in their 79-42 win over Fort Stockton.
“We struggled to get going offensively in the first quarter, only scoring six points, which dug the team into an early deficit,” coach Hunter Grice said.
Leading the team in scoring on Senior Night was senior Shane Velasquez, finishing with nine points. Senior, Anthony Gomez scored eight points and Elias Sanchez netted four points, along with three charges taken on the defensive side of the ball.
The coaching staff thanked all seven seniors (Dominic Aguilar, Caleb Garcia, Gomez, Devon Rodriguez, Sanchez, Miguel Trejo, Velasquez) for the hard work, effort, and time they put into the program over the past four years of their high school careers.
Indians’ JV escapes with narrow victory
Fort Stockton’s junior varsity squad battled till the very end of Tuesday’s game but were unable to hold on in the final minute of their season finale on Feb. 15 against Seminole.
The Indians buried a 3-pointer in the corner with 20 seconds remaining to complete a 46-43 comeback victory against the Panthers.
After a slow start to the game, the Panthers fought back to take a fourpoint lead heading into the final quarter.
The Panthers rallied once again after letting their lead slip away in the early stages of the fourth frame. Fort Stockton tied the game at 43- 43 with less than a minute to play. Andre Washington led the Panthers with 12 points and Jose Herrera finished with 11.
“The Panthers capped off their season with a strong effort, which they should be proud of,” Grice said.
