Basketball roundup: Fort Stockton middle school squads end season on high note

Greenwood 75 Panthers Freshman 65

The freshman Panthers and Greenwood went toe to toe for four quarters on Feb. 1 in what proved to be a back-and-forth game the entire way. The Rangers came away with the win 75-65.

The Panthers had fourplayers score in double figures.

Kael Rojero and Gama Corral scored 13 points apiece, Christian Soto added 12, and Adric Gallegos finished with 10.

Brandon Ureste did an amazing job on defense according to coach Richard Rojas.

“This was an exciting game. The team compet ed and never gave up. I am proud of them,” Rojas said.

Greenwood 60 Panthers JV 50

Fort Stockton darted out to a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter before the Rangers began to chip away at the junior varsity Panthers advantage.

Greenwood outscored Fort Stockton by 20 points in the final three quarters to secure a 60-50 win.

Leading the team in points was Kye Norman with a season-high 12 points. AJ Granado tallied 10 points and Luis Medina scored nine.

Greenwood 59 Prowlers JV 23

The Prowlers junior varsity squad fell to the visiting Greenwood Rangerettes 59-23 on Feb. 1

Yvette Lopez scored a team-best 17 points for the Prowlers.

Estrella Aguilar tallied a team-high two assists while Mayrene Bernal, Priscilla Trevino, and Estrella Aguilar tied for a team-best three rebounds apiece.

7th Grade Panthers Blue 51 Monahans 19

The future of the Panthers basketball program has the potential to be bright.

The Fort Stockton seventh grade Blue basketball presented that idea to conclude their season on Feb. 7 at Monahans.

Rylee Muniz scored a team-high 16 points and eight additional players found the bottom of the net in Fort Stockton’s 51-19 rout of the Loboes.

“We played all four quarter with top notch energy, teamwork, and endless hustle,” Panthers coach Sergio Guardiola said.

Cody Young scored seven points and Angel Lujan contributed with eight points.

Guardiola noted the Lujan, Brandon Sylvester, and Kade Castillo were his outstanding defensive players of the game.

8th Grade Prowlers Blue 51 Alpine 33

The eighth grade Prowlers Blue team concluded their season in style on Jan. 31, downing Alpine 51-33 behind a game-high 21 points by Jocelyn Carrillo.

Thiara had 12 points and Vicky finished with five.

“They played well as a team and had such a great season,” Prowlers coach Mary Villarreal said.

Pecos 29 8th Grade Prowlers White 24

The eighth grade Prowlers White team finished their 2021-2022 campaign with a hardfought 29-24 loss to Pecos on Jan. 31.

Diem Hinostroza, Mady Gomez, and Yaritza Hernandez tied for a team-high six points apiece for the Prowlers.

“They had a great season,” Villarreal said.

7th Grade Prowlers Blue 41 Pecos 5

Alondra Encians scored a team-high 13 points for the seventh grade Prowlers Blue team on Jan. 31 against Pecos, and Kailyn Reeves added 10 in Fort Stockton’s 36-point victory over the Eagles.

“We finished up the season with a great win over the lady Eagles. Great Job Prowlers,” Fort Stockton coach Pat Pena said.

8th Grade Prowlers White 22 Pecos 9

Despite separating the eighth grade Prowler White team into two units due to a scheduling issue with Pecos, Fort Stockton still managed to claim a victory against the Eagles in one of the two matchups on Jan. 31.

The Prowlers team, who went against the Eagles B squad, won 22-9.

According to coach Ashley Lawhorn, Havyn Gaytan led the team and directed the court. Lauren Dominguez was the defensive player of the game.

Pecos 30 8th Grade Prowlers White 24

The additional Prowlers eighth grade White team fell to Pecos 30-24 on Jan. 31 in a back-and-forth contest.

“Mady Gomez and Lannah Ramirez fought to maintain their guard as the Eagles tried to break through. Jocelyn Carrillo, Paige Boon, Diem Hinostroza, and Yaritza Hernandez moved the ball efficiently to keep the game as close as possible,” Lawhorn said.

7th Grade Prowlers White 25 Pecos 17

Yareli Palacios scored nearly half of her team’s points, dropping 12 on the Eagles in the seventh grade Prowlers White team’s 25-17 victory to conclude the season on Jan. 31.

“After some adjustments, the Prowlers defense was hard to beat and once again led to fast breaks and layups,” Prowlers coach Lauren Rubio said.

Angelina Acosta netted four points and Kaelynn Calderon added three.

7th Grade Panthers 28 Pecos 7

Brandon Sylvester and Kade Castillo were named outstanding defensive players by their coach Sergio Guardiola in the seventh grade Panthers 28-7 victory on Jan. 31.

Rylee Muniz contributed a team-high 10 points and Angel Lujan followed with six.

“We opened up aggressive, energetic, and were able to make the most of our opportunities early.”
