Panthers place fourth in Van Horn

Fort Stockton’s junior varsity basketball team was able to measure themselves against varsity competition this past week at the Van Horn Tournament.

The Panthers finished in fourth place as a team after accumulating a 1-2 record.

Zane Hodges earned all-tournament team honors at the three-day event, leading the Panthers in scoring in two of their three outings with 11.3 points per game.

Fort Stockton’s lone win came against Sierra Blanca on Dec. 9 in the Panthers tourney opener.

Fort Stockton jumped out to an early lead via a 25-point first quarter and never looked back in their 63-41 win.

Leading the Panthers in scoring was Hodges with a tournament-best 16 points.

Johan Mireles also had a strong game, scoring 12 points via four 3-pointers.

Everado Sandoval and Ezequiel Soto both had season highs in points coming off the bench with six points apiece.

Fort Stockton earned a chance to qualify for the tournament’s championship game via a matchup against Tornillo on Dec. 10.

The Panthers got off to a slow start and rallied, but trailed by 15 points at the break.

The Panthers fell to the Coyotes 66-38.

Aryan Hernandez was the leading scorer for the Panthers with 10 points.

Marco Garcia finished with nine and Hodges also had a solid outing, finishing with eight points and several boards.

Fort Stockton concluded the tournament on Dec. 11 with a 68-36 loss to Immanuel.

Hodges led the Panthers in scoring with 10 points. Garcia contributed to the Panthers scoring efforts with seven points while Hernandez and Soto finished with six points apiece.

The JV team will be back in action on Tuesday against Denver City at home.
