In 1927, V.T. Hamlin was working as a poster designer and mapmaker for the oil industry in Iraan. He was stationed in the Yates Field, one of the largest oil fields in the Permian Basin. During this time, he thought about the dinosaurs and other ancient creatures who once roamed the area, and created the comic strip character Alley Oop.
Alley Oop, the strip’s title character, was a sturdy citizen who lived in the prehistoric kingdom of Moo. The large replica of the character is located at Alley Oop Fantasyland in Iraan. Courtesy Photo
