Blackwell School becomes National Historic Site

The Blackwell School in Marfa was officially designated as a National Historic Site and a part of the National Park System this past Tuesday.

Congressman of the school’s region, Tony Gonzales, spearheaded the bill over a year ago with the hopes of preserving an important piece of Latino history to the area.

Hospital district election decision upcoming for county

Pecos County Memorial Hospital’s first step in reaching a hospital district election is set to be finalized by the end of the week. The hospital needed at least 100 petition signatures to take the next step in the process to reach an election and according to PCMH CEO Betsy Briscoe, 210 signatures have been unofficially verified through the voter roll.

Fort Stockton’s most notorious annual barbecue cookoff is back and once again, it’s for a great cause that can be a blessing for many. Some of the best barbecuers in the state will converge in Fort Stockton at Rooney Park on Sept.

FSCT to host tryouts for “A Christmas Story”

Fort Stockton Community Theatre will hold tryouts for young people second grade through high school for its production of  “A Christmas Story,” written by Philip Grecian. Reba Subia will direct the play which will be performed Thursday. Dec. 8 through Sunday, Dec.11.

At least 15 young people are needed to perform or to work backstage. Tryouts will be Sunday, Oct. 2, from 3-4:30 p.m. and again on Monday, Oct. 3, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Nelson Street Theatre.

Capital Highlights: Hispanic Texans likely largest demographic group

The U.S. Census Bureau released its latest estimate, which indicates Hispanic residents in Texas make up more of the state’s population than white residents. The new population figures from the American Community Survey indicate Hispanic Texans comprise 40.2% of the state’s population last year, while non-Hispanic white Texans made up 39.4%, as reported in the Texas Tribune.
