Every American has a story, and sometimes those stories come together beneath a single flag. In Fort Stockton, that story begins with the veterans of American Legion Post 234, whose commitment to service continues long after their military careers have ended.

This past weekend, the community of Iraan-Sheffield gathered to celebrate something far greater than a festival. Through its annual Alley Oop celebration, organized by the Iraan-Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, residents and visitors came together to honor two enduring symbols of local identity: the legendary Alley Oop comic strip and the 100th anniversary of the Yates Oil Field.

INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 large egg, beaten 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce 1-pound jumbo lump crab meat, picked over 20 saltine crackers, finely crushed 1/4 cup canola oil Lemon wedges, for serving DIRECTIONS Mix all of the ingredients in a large bowl except the crab meat and crushed crackers. Gently fold in the crab meat and crackers, being careful not to break up the crab lumps.

In the schema of the Christian Year that most of us follow Pentecost Sunday is revealed as a single event, a “birthdate” of the universal Church, so to speak. Unless it is treated, as only a few of us do, as the commencement of a Season of the Church Year, it closes off the Easter Season of some weeks, which itself follows the Lenten Season “of forty days,” and opens “ordinary time.” Yet Pentecost betokens a movement of God that is far from ordinary— “the falling of the Holy Spirit on the community of Jesus followers blessed by a number of appearances of the Risen Lord only to witness to His ascension “to His eternal place at the right hand of God” and lately to become preoccupied by reordering the life of the left behind through the election of a twelfth apostle. The coming of the Holy Spirit upon this dis-spirited Church is, rather, quite extraordinary. Certainly not an annual calendar event, the subsequent Pentecost events make up a short list of occurrences during the over 2,000 following seasons.
