Pecos County Senior Center hosting Memorial Day cookout
For those 55 or older, there is a tremendous resource available in Fort Stockton. The Pecos County Senior Citizen’s Center at 1010 West 14th Street offers activities, events, and a cool place to be during the hot weather.
Operated by Precinct 1 of Pecos County Commissioner’s Court, the senior center charges only $5 per year in dues. For small amount, seniors can take part in several regularly scheduled activities, including afternoon games of Skip Bo, or 42 dominoes, as well as the Lazy Daisy Quilters, and regular pot lucks and cook outs.
Games start at 12:30 p.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and take place in the air-conditioned comfort of the senior center. Coffee and water are provided. For friends or relatives who need to escape the heat or make new friends, drop them off or use TRAX for transportation.
The New Century Social Club - 42 and dominoes - is scheduled to meet Thursday at 1:30 pm. The Lazy Daisy Quilters meet at 1 p.m. each Thursday, and American Legion Post 234 meets the last Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
The next big event will be the Memorial Day Cookout at noon, on Friday, May 27. Hamburgers and drinks will be provided. Participants are asked to bring a side dish. The cookout is open to all Senior Center members.
Upcoming events include the Fourth of July hot dog supper, pot luck lunches that will be scheduled through the rest of the year, and healthy food demonstrations by Pecos County Extension Agent Karan Heffelfinger.
