Fort Stockton Community Theatre had a successful run of the comedy “Mama Won’t Fly,” written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten.

Close to 300 people enjoyed live entertainment Feb. 19-24 under the direction of Alice Duerksen, as Tracy Alexander, Dean Duerksen, Oralia Hall, Michele Huckaby, Frank Lacy, Pam Palileo, Michelle Salazar, Penny Smith, and Kirby Warnock took the audience on a madcap road trip from Birmingham to Santa Monica for a wedding. Former Fort Stockton resident Art Fuentes made a cameo appearance, and Jarryd Hall, J.B. Gallegos, Dominic Leyva, Vicki Mitchell, and Cole Mitchell provided technical and backstage support.

February is the theatre’s birthday month, as the group had its first production in February 1983. For 38 years the group has performed on every flat surface in town, and provided fine arts experiences for thousands of people in the area and from as far away as England.

Susann Hall has cast “The Butler Did It” by Todd Wallinger, and will begin rehearsals for the comedy who-dunnit to perform May 13-17. The cast of this show features the theatre’s young people. They are the future of theatre in the community.

“We are proud of the youth who participate in our productions,” said Board President Alice Duerksen. “Many of our young people have gone on to study and perform in theatre in college.” Details about show times are forthcoming. The group is looking for Victorian-style furniture that the theatre can borrow or rent for this production. Contact Susann Hall at 432-360-6618.

To encourage and involve more young people, the theatre will conduct a second Be Cool/Stay Cool summer camp the last two weeks of June. Youth from first through eighth grade are invited to produce a play for an audience. Call Alice Duerksen at 336-3180 for more information.

The popular karaoke night will be returning to the theatre. Singers will perform, and family and friends will vote with their dollar bills to determine the next Karaoke King or Queen. Doors will open at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 10.

Fort Stockton Community Theatre is run completely by volunteers. There is no paid staff. Call Alice Duerksen at 432-336-3180 to get involved.
