The Fort Stockton Independent School District students will return from winter break on Tuesday, Jan. 12 and as of Monday, Jan. 4, there are currently six active cases from students and staff combined in the district.

There are four students who are active cases and of those active cases, two attend the high school, one attends the middle school, and one is unknown.

There are two staff members who are active cases according to the district’s report on Jan. 4. One of those teachers teach at the middle school and the other at the Intermediate school.

Currently, the school district plans to continue classes in-person and online depending on the preference of parents and students.

PCMH hospitalizations plummet

Pecos County Memorial Hospital has only two hospitalizations as of Jan. 5 – the lowest number of hospitalizations at the facility since the beginning of December when active cases were below 50 in the county.

Outside of the two hospitalizations at PCMH, there are 13 additional Pecos County residents hospitalized statewide due to the severity of their symptoms and the trauma center level of PCMH.

Over the past eight days COVID-19 active cases have trended in the same direction as hospitalizations. On Tuesday, Dec. 29 there were 88 active cases and on Jan. 5 it was reported that there were 59 active cases. That is the lowest number of active cases in the county since Dec. 8 when the number was at 48.

Over that same span of time there were 34 new cases and 59 recoveries.

Since the start of the pandemic there have been 842 Pecos County residents test positive for COVID-19. There have been 3,822 tests administered with 2,729 of those coming back negative.

The number of COVID-19 related deaths has stayed at 23 since Nov. 23.

There are 79 tests currently pending.
