Desert Pines to purchase more golf carts
To keep up with the high demand, the Desert Pines Golf Course will be adding 10 additional golf carts to its supply.
On March 7, the Pecos County Commissioners Court approved an early release of funds to pro shop manager Fabian Zorilla’s for a check of over $3,000, which is needed to guarantee the delivery of the new golf carts.
“We ordered 10 golf carts for the pro shop because last year we had such high demand for golf carts and we needed 10 more,” Zorilla said. “Yamaha was so backed up on golf carts and they kind of randomly popped up and said, ‘hey your golf carts are ready.’ … If I don’t get these golf carts, we are going to struggle. It’s tough not having golf carts for these tournaments we’ve been having.”
Zorilla will have to pay an upfront fee of $1,900 for the 10 golf carts but following that, he will pay $1,800 monthly without insurance for all 28 carts.
“It is something we’ve got to have,” Zorilla said. [Currently, we have] 18 and that’s not enough. I’m even afraid this 10 won’t be enough but it will put a little band aid on the wound.”
Judge Joe Shuster suggested that golfers could bring their own carts to the course and make them available to rent to other golfers. But, Zorilla explained that would be a last resort option because they tried it last year and it’s more of a headache than a convenience due to liability reasons.
“Our current economy doesn’t allow us the flexibility to go up on prices,” Zorilla said. “People would just rather walk than borrow someone’s cart. We’ve got to make it economical so somebody would be able to rent a cart.”
Shuster and commissioner Tom Chapman both agreed that Zorilla should look into slightly increasing prices.
“I’m not here to tell you how to run your business,” Shuster said. “But, I think you need to go ahead and consider raising that $20 figure to $25. That $5 will make a lot of difference in the long run.”
