Two of the three local contested races for this year’s primary election were decided on March 1 and one will be headed to a runoff election in May.

The Democratic candidate race for Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 proved to be the tightest as incumbent Ruben Salinas defeated Oscar Gallegos by six votes (358-352). Salinas trailed 220-216 after early votes were reported.

The District Clerk race was the lone contested race with three candidates vying for one nomination – meaning that the winner needed to get 50% of the vote plus one to secure the nomination without a runoff election.

Darla Cude received 41.2% of the votes (558) and Tammy Lujan received 31.1% of the votes (422). Sylvia Guerra received 374 votes (27.6%).

Election day for primary runoff elections is scheduled for May 24. Early voting begins May 16 and runs through May 20. Cude and Lujan will be the lone local runoff election.

Nathan Reeves won the Republican nomination for County Commissioner Pct. 4 with 206 votes (61.6%). Opponent Dudley McKissack received 128 votes (38.4%).

At the district level, Tony Gonzales received 72% of Pecos County votes (942) for Rep. U.S. Representative District 23. On the Democratic ballot, Priscilla Golden received the most votes in Pecos County for U.S. Representative District 23 with 306 votes (52%).

Republican Andrew S. Murr tallied the most votes for State Representative District 53 with 682 (61%).

For Governor of Texas, Republican Greg Abbott received 70% of the vote in Pecos County (961 votes) and Beto O’Rourke also received 70% percent of votes from the Democratic ballots (444 votes).
