The Pecos County Sheriff’s Office will soon be helping in the fight against the smuggling of drugs, narcotics, and trafficking after a grant approval at the Pecos County Commissioner’s Court regular meeting on Monday, Feb. 8.

The commissioners approved a $41,500 OPSG-19 Grant, which will cover all but $181 of the cost for a license plate reader trailer.

The $181 is paid for by the county.

The process of attaining a reader has been in the works for approximately a year now according to Pecos County Sheriff Office Deputy Jessie Dominguez, who is also the Emergency Management Coordinator for the county.

The reader will mainly be used for monitoring of vehicles that travel north and south on a frequent basis from out of the area - particularly Mexico.

“That’s used for keeping track of narcotic and smuggling, trafficking. It’s tied in with the state database and U. S. Border Patrol database; Dominguez said. “If there is reoccurring vehicles from back down that same road it’ll monitor it and trigger it that it’s license plate has been coming through here every so often.”

The reader is projected to arrive in the next 30 days according to Pecos County Judge Joe Shuster. The trailer will also be the first reader the Sheriff’s Office has had in its history.
