Additional COVID-19 death moves death toll to 28

An 83-year-old female, who was hospitalized originally at PCMH on Jan. 7 due to COVID-19, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at a hospital in El Paso.

The death moves the Coronavirus death toll in Pecos

Over the past week the total number of deaths in the county rose from 24 to 28 after a onemonth period of having no deaths in the county - dating from Nov. 24 to Dec. 23.

Despite the increase in deaths, active COVID-19 cases in the county have plummeted and trended in a downward direction since the start of the new year.

The last time there was over 80 active cases in the county was on Tuesday, Dec. 29 when there were a reported 88 active cases.

That number has since dropped to 46 active cases as of Tuesday, Jan. 19. That’s the lowest number of active cases in Pecos County since Dec. 4 when there were a reported 44 active cases.

COVID-19 hospitalizations are also at the lowest number they’ve been since the spike in cases in early December. There is only one patient hospitalized as of Tuesday at PCMH and four additional patients hospitalized statewide.

As of Thursday, Jan. 14, there are four active cases within the Fort Stockton Independent School District. Three of those cases are students and one is a staff member. The four active cases raises the total number of positive tests within the district to 75 since the start of testing at the beginning of the school year. A total of 41 students and 34 staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.
