Commissioners adopt budget, set tax rate public hearing

The Pecos County Commissioners Court approved the 2022 budget at its Aug. 16 meeting.

The proposed total tax rate is 0.777 per $100 valuation compared to the 2021 rate of 0.7074. The general fund rate is 0.0654; road and bridge is 0.0123; and debt service is 0.00.

Pecos County is anticipating a higher tax rate to bring in approximately the same amount of money last year, due to a decrease in value, according to Pecos County Judge Joe Shuster.

First responders get new equipment

Pecos County first responders will soon receive more lifesaving emergency equipment. The Permian Road Safety Coalition approached the county about collecting donations from organizations throughout the Permian Basin to provide emergency equipment for various departments.

DPS urges drivers to be aware as school year begins

With the school year beginning in person for many districts across the state, the Texas Department of Public Safety is reminding the public of steps they can take to keep students and staff members safe. This includes slowing down in school zones, staying off cell phones and being aware at all times while around school buses.

Gonzales, Burgess express concern for release of COVID-positive migrants

Congressmen Tony Gonzales (TX-23) and Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (TX-26) led eight members of the Texas Delegation in sending a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas. The members expressed concern for the Administration’s practice of catch-and-release for the thousands of migrants unlawfully crossing our southern border and the lack of consistent testing for COVID-19.

City council meeting scheduled for Tuesday

The Fort Stockton City Council will hold their regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 10 at City Hall.

The city’s proposed tax rate is an action item and is set to be discussed/acted upon for the 2021-2022 fiscal-year budget.

Order of a special election for Nov. 2, 2021, early voting (Oct. 18-29), and sales of eight video masking systems (projector screens) with Rene Bates Auctioneers, Inc. are action items on the agenda as well.
