Ballistic film purchase approved

All student-attended Fort Stockton ISD campuses will have an added layer of safety by the time the 2022-2023 school year starts. Ballistic film will be installed at the Apache, Alamo, intermediate, middle school, and high school campuses within the next four weeks.

Texas Water Trade unveils aquifer protection fund

Texas Water Trade, a nonprofit organization established to enable the use of voluntary water transactions to benefit people and nature, has unveiled its first Aquifer Protection Fund to allow landowners to conserve their groundwater without losing ownership of it.

BRI hosts international exchange

The Borderlands Research Institute, housed at Sul Ross State University, hosted students from the Autonomous University of Chihuahua, a Mexican public university located in Chihuahua City, Chihuahua, Mexico. Students from the Animal Science and Ecology programs at UACH learned about BRI research projects along with other regional conservation initiatives.

Students visited with conservation agencies throughout the Big Bend, including the ranches of the Dixon Water Foundation in Marfa, to see the results of restoration projects.

Cosmetology innovative courses set for 2022-2023 school year

The Fort Stockton ISD cosmetology program will receive a reboot this upcoming school year after receiving $150,000 from fund balance by way of approval from the school board earlier last month.

The school district approved mandatory courses, per TEA, to continue to move forward with the program during their meeting on June 30.

Fort Stockton ISD approves exception for developmental leave

Body

In order to lend a helping hand to one of their own, the Fort Stockton Independent School District approved developmental leave for one of their teachers who has a daughter battling cancer.

Assistant Band Director Lindsey Kilgore, who has been working at Fort Stockton ISD for over five years, received developmental leave approval from the district at their regular board meeting on June 30.

The approval will result in one semester of full pay (fall 2022).

Sul Ross: New Museum of the Big Bend to hold beam signing

The Museum of the Big Bend will commemorate a milestone in the construction of its new building with a “Sign the Beam” ceremony on Wednesday, July 13, at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend.

The new complex, scheduled for completion in early 2023, will double the space of the museum and will include a temporary exhibit gallery, a rotating Tom Lea gallery, additional collection storage and an inviting interior event space with a connecting outdoor patio that highlights the panoramic view of the western mountains.

Braxton Kole Hernandez, of Fort Worth at 3:05 p.m., officers from the Department of Public Safety apprehended Hernandez and he was charged with five counts of smuggling of persons and one count of smuggling of persons under the age of 18. Hernandez received bonds totaling $60,000 and is still in jail.

Legal review underway regarding land purchase

A correction of meeting minutes at the June 30 Fort Stockton ISD School Board meeting provided additional insight into the legality of a land purchase by district a year ago. And a legal review of the land purchase in the near future will soon bring finality to the matter.

Capital Highlights: Three arrested in deaths of 53 migrants

Body
Three people were arrested last week by federal authorities in connection with a human smuggling incident that left 53 migrants dead. The migrants were discovered inside a tractor-trailer on San Antonio’s Southwest Side, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
