February 1981: FUTURE STAR – One of the bright stars in the Blue Wave’s future is John Pul Hernandez, a freshman who competed in the 100-yard butterfly competition this year. Although Hernandez failed to qualify in the event for the regionals, he will attend the competition as an alternate for one of the Blue Wave’s boys’ two relay teams.

February 1981: NEW LIBRARY – Dedication ceremonies for Fort Stockton’s new 12,000 square foot library begin at 2 p.m. All county residents are invited to view the beautiful new facility which replaces a 3,800 square foot building built here in 1948. Refreshments will be served at the Fifth Street House in connection with the dedication events.

February 1981: MR. AND MISS FSHS – Joel Velasquez and Karla Rodriguez were honored with the coveted title of Mr. FSHS and Miss FSHS by their fellow students Saturday night at the annual Favorites Valentine Dance. Both are all-around students, serve on the Student Council and are candidates for graduation this spring. Miss Rodriguez is the daughter Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Rodriguez, and Velasquez is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest J. Velasquez Jr.

February 1981: TROPHY TEAM – The Fort Stockton boys’ Blue Wave medley relay quartet, from left, Charlie Speegle, David Borden, Scott McClure and Terrell Jordan, upset a powerful Monahans team to win the first-place trophy for the event in a weekend swimming meet in the Green Machine pool in Monahans.

February 1981: STILL SWINGING – Lyle Scott, an avid golfer for the past 56 years, is back on the fairways after a 10-month absence. Scott made his second hole-in-one on the nine-hole course west of town two years ago and intends to go for a third when the greens are extended to 18 holes later this year.
