Last Friday night in Alpine, a local officiating crew out of Fort Stockton wrapped up the final game of the regular season, marking the close of another year of dedication and commitment on the gridiron. For the past 11 weeks, these men have given up their Friday—and often Thursday—nights to ensure that student-athletes across West Texas can safely and fairly play the game of football.

When disaster strikes

Body
I have watched several documentaries, read personal accounts or was told by eyewitnesses of how the people responded that were in a large destructive, terrible hurricane. I think it is very hard to understand what someone is going through unless it has happened to you. Thousands of people were able to get to safety. Some on their own and others with a lot of help. Many were taken to shelters, homes, churches or benevolent facilities.

Brisk days and crunchy autumn leaves remind us that fall is here. Store displays have changed from Halloween to Thanksgiving. We are beginning to smell pumpkin pies baking. We hear songs of Thanksgiving being played and sang. Many memories of past Thanksgivings flow through our minds.

Is There a ‘Perfectville’ in Your Life?

Body
My morning routine: wonder, “How many business ventures has Elon Musk launched in the time it took me to microwave this sausage patty?” My evening routine: read Terri Libenson’s “The Pajama Diaries” comic strip, in which protagonist Jill Kaplan is often shamed by the well-intentioned SuperMom neighbor she has dubbed “Perfectville.” It can be a SuperMom, SuperDad, SuperSibling or Super-Colleague, but I imagine most of us endure a “Perfectville” in our lives. They are good people and handy to have around in a pinch; but their boundless optimism, energy, skill sets, luck (“I donated my PowerBall winnings to the Humane Society and could have donated even more if I had actually purchased a ticket”), free time and bankroll are aggravatingly intimidating.
