February 1960: INSPECTION – Members of the Fort Stockton Jaycees inspected facilities at the Fort Stockton High School FFA barn following a recent luncheon meeting. Four chapter members show off some of their prize sheep as the Jaycees look on. Among the sheep was the champion of the recent stock show.

Improper pruning of oaks can lead to fungal disease

GARDENER’S MAILBAG Dear Neil: I need a crash course in oak wilt. What types of oaks are most likely to be affected? How can I know if my trees are in danger? What precautions can I take and who should I hire? When can I have them pruned?

This is an example of a terrible pruning technique on several levels. Cuts were made against trunks without regard to branch collars. The result was much more surface left exposed. Too much top growth was removed at one time. Cuts were not sealed to protect against the spread of oak wilt. Cuts were made Easter weekend – right in the middle of the spring “Do not trim” season for all types of oaks. Photo by Neil Sperry.

The Fort Stockton-Pecos County Airport held a ribbon cutting for its new terminal on Saturday morning, with county officials, Chamber of Commerce members, friends and family of the airport staff, and Miss Fort Stockton Audrey Mendoza on hand to help the airport celebrate. The Fort Stockton Intergovernmental Recreation Board met in a special session Feb. 8 and upheld the suspension of a recreation league youth basketball coach after a Feb. 3 incident in which the coach, Colby Terrazas, pulled his team off the court and quit the game at the start of the fourth quarter.

Waco man runs from cops, killed in I-10 crash

A 32-year-old Waco man was killed Feb. 6 when he was struck by a semi after fleeing from Pecos County Deputies. Mark Anthony Lopez Jr., 32, of Waco, was driving a 2011 Jeep Liberty and was pulled over by a Pecos County Sheriff’s Deputy on Interstate 10 near Sheffield for a routine traffic violation.
