Jantz continues Sonic family legacy

Body

The Sonic drive-thru restaurant has been a Fort Stockton staple since 1976 under the ownership of Travis Lewis. The location has been successful in its 40-plus years of operation.

Caleb Jantz became manager of the Fort Stockton Sonic last March.

“Caleb has been around the Sonic brand all his life and has worked in a drive-in for several years” said Tom Clifton, Supervising Partner of Tom Lewis Investments. “He brings a fast and friendly service commitment to our drive-in at Fort Stockton.”

County seeks grant for Iraan park improvements

Body
Precinct 3 Commissioner Mickey Jack Perry and his crew have been working to improve the Iraan Pecos River Park, investing time, labor, and nearly $70,000 in budgeted funds, as of 2023. The ongoing work has caught the eye of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). The County’s history of dedication to the park and the local citizens, combined with a strong emphasis within TPWD to expand recreational opportunities in West Texas, has set the stage for future collaborative work. After speaking with Commissioner Perry, TPWD’s Inland Fisheries Division biologists assisted in the creation of a Habitat and Angler Access Program (HAAP) grant draft for the Iraan Pecos River Park. On May 8, The Pecos County Commissioner’s Court voted to apply for the grant.

A myriad of reasons can cause rose leaves to turn colors

Body
GARDENER’S MAILBAG Dear Neil: Why do rose leaves turn yellow and brown? Looking at the one or two leaves in your photo it appears that droplets of water or some other sprays have been on the leaves when the sun was shining brightly. That would account for the tiny brown “freckles.” The most common rose disease is called black spot, and it causes yellowing with large dark brown blotches in the centers of the yellowed leaves.

Darge collection donated to Museum of the Big Bend

Body
The Museum of the Big Bend received a generous contribution from Robert and Bonnie McKee as the couple donated their entire collection of Friedrich Ernst “Fred” Darge paintings, which will become part of the museum’s Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. McKee III Family Collection. It will debut during the grand opening of the Emmett and Miriam McCoy Building in Alpine June 23-24. While the McKees were aware of Fred Darge’s art, they were focused on early Taos/Santa Fe and early Texas art, following in the footsteps of Robert’s grandfather. Their daughter, Marjorie McKee Harris, was also aware of Darge due to her upbringing, explaining that while her friends and their families visited South Padre Island, her parents “dragged” her and her brother to art galleries and art auctions.
