GARDENER’S MAILBAG Dear Neil: My bald cypress tree is sending up huge roots above the ground. Can I cut these off? I’m afraid they’ll eventually reach my foundation and damage it.

April 1991: ROUGH LANDING – A plane piloted by an unidentified woman had a rough landing at the local airport. The plane’s landing gear reportedly failed to lock into place and the plane skidded down the runway coming to rest on its nose. There were no injuries reported.

April 1991: LO TON KICKS OFF CRUSADE – Danny Valenzuela, member of the To Ton Car Club presents a check for $1,000 to Cancer Crusade Chairman Petra Gonzales. The donation, proceeds from a recent car show held here, was the first big gift for the annual crusade.

It is important to note that an arrest should not be considered as evidence of guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

KARAN’S KORNER Far too often we read in the newspaper that a car crossed the center line and ran into a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Most times this is caused by driver distraction, often when the driver is texting.

FAITH COLUMN Forgiveness may mean a lot of different things but to me it means peace. Of course, it took me 30 plus years to understand what forgiveness meant.

GUEST COLUMNIST Tax returns were due this week and many Americans were surely stressed out as they scrambled to get their financial records in order. I can’t think of a better time to revisit the wit and wisdom of Will Rogers.

GUEST COLUMNIST My brother, the former Babe Ruth Leaguer, remains deeply skeptical of Major League Baseball’s newly instituted pitch clock. He is not alone in regarding the sport’s leisurely pace as an integral part of its charm.

Apache Elementary School has started their annual round-up of Pre-K and kindergarten students for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. In order to qualify for Pre-K, students must be 4-years-old by September 1, 2023, and meet certain requirements.

As the only location in Fort Stockton for gently used clothing and housewares, El Buen Vecino fills a need in a city that has no Goodwill, or Thrift Stores. Operated by volunteers out of an old building owned by the First Methodist Church, El Buen Vecino has been helping people for decades.
