Prowler youth shines in Lamesa
A sneak peak of the future was revealed by the Prowlers basketball program at the O.W. Follis Tournament last week.
Head coach Lea Daggett infused his lineup with four freshmen over the course of five games during the three-day event following a 2-5 start to the season before the tourney.
And without leading scorer Mia Garica competing in Lamesa, another viable scorer emerged as freshman Victoria Maldonado tallied the secondhighest scoring total (27 points) on Fort Stockton’s way to a 2-3 record.
“The four freshmen have been doing really well at the lower levels and they play an uptempo style of basketball I like,” Daggett said. “I made a decision to ramp it up a little bit and put some pressure on the upperclassmen and let them know that their job is not secured just because they are a senior or a junior. They’re going to have to work hard because these freshmen are hungry and they want that job.”
The Prowlers earned a 62-17 win over Lamesa Gold – the school’s junior varsity team – on Dec. 1 and followed on Friday with a 38-24 victory against Class 2A Post.
Senior guard Brianna Diaz led the Prowlers in scoring via a 6.4 points per game average.
Maldonado followed at 4.6 ppg and was the only Prowler to reach a double-digit point total in the tournament. The 5-foot-3 freshman tallied a team-best 10 points in her team’s win against Lamesa Gold.
The three additional freshmen that saw playing time in Lamesa included Kimbree Norman, Jocelynn Arcides and Thiaraneth Wislar.
Fort Stockton’s three losses at the tourney came against Permian (50-29), Lamesa (48-34), and Garden City (58-38).
Big Springs defeat Prowlers
The Lady Steers outscored Fort Stockton 3719 in the first three quarters of play on Dec. 6 in Big Spring and coasted to a 43-32 victory behind a game-high 10 points by senior Daniah Wrighter.
Seniors Estrella Aguilar and Eliana Mata tied for a team-high nine points for Fort Stockton.
Brianna Diaz tallied six points, Maldonado finished with four, and Norman added four.
Fort Stockton (4-9) will head to Reagan County on Friday, Dec. 9 before hosting Lake View on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
