Lady Longhorns struggle at Denver City tournament; Longhorns go 2-2 at Meadow tournamnt
The Buena Vista Lady Longhorns competed in the Denver City tournament last Thursday through Saturday, with the Lady Longhorns suffering a string of setbacks against competition in higher classifications.
The Buena Vista varsity boys competed in a tournament at Meadow and garnered two wins.
For the Denver City tournament, the Lady Longhorns fell to Slaton, 48-20; Denver City, 40-29; Lubbock Estacado 46-20, and Kermit, 31-18.
The Buena Vista boys had better luck at the Meadow tournament, going 2-2, with wins over the Meadow JV, 41-15 and Lubbock Christ the King Cathedral, 56-22. Buena Vista’s losses were to White Deer, 47-39, and Meadow’s varsity, 28-21.
“It was a good tournament, a lot of good teams there,” said Buena Vista boy’s head coach Aaron Notgrass. “Our boys coming out of football, having such a good, successful season in football, we’d really only practiced one day, so we used that tournament more as like trying to figure out who we are and what we can and can’t do and learn. I thought the boys did a really good job.”
Of Buena Vista’s 10 varsity players, five are freshmen.
“And those freshmen are all called upon to play a lot of the game,” Notgrass said. “For the most part, I think the kids did really good. We lost a couple early ones and then we ended up beating the team at the end by 30-something points that had beat all the other teams.
“I think the kids eventually got better as the time went on. The future is bright and the excitement level is there, for sure.”
Freshman Jackie Jurado averaged 13-14 points per game at the tournament.
“That’s not too bad, especially at that level of competition,” Notgrass said.
