Lady Longhorns capture district crown
The Buena Vista girls athletic programs have reigned supreme in their respective district and classification during the 2021- 2022 school year.
On March 31, the Lady Longhorns claimed their fourth district title this season in as many sports with a first-place finish at the District 10-1A Track & Field Championships in Rankin.
Buena Vista dethroned last year’s champion, Rankin, with a score of 169 points – 26 greater than the runner-up Red Devils.
The Lady Longhorns won seven individual gold medals and three silver medals.
Mariana Sanchez, who was one of the Class 1A cross country title contenders before an injury occurred before state last fall, swept the long distant events in convincing fashion. Kiara Corona took first place in the 200 in time of 28.49 and Kiele Sickler cleared 4-10 in the high jump to win a gold medal.
