The Fort Stockton Independent School District held a regular School Board meeting on Monday, June 24. This meeting had only a few items on the agenda; however, the contentious content regarding the year-round calendar proposal extended the discussions to two hours.

The Pecos County Commissioners Court held its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday morning at 10 a.m., June 24. During this meeting, the court approved the future installation of the Alamo Letter Society’s plaque with the “Victory or Death” letter by William Barret Travis.

The Fort Stockton City Council held its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, June 24. First and foremost, at this meeting, the council welcomed the local HAM radio operators club forward to receive recognition and a plaque for the service they provide to the community, especially in cases of emergency.

“Magic is the medium, Literacy is the message.” Magician Bronson Chadwick described his dedication to the curriculum for “Magic in the Library” after performing a magic show to kick off the Imperial Public Library Summer Reading Program on June 6, 2024. The event brought students, staff, and community members together at the Imperial Community Center, 208 Allison Street, for an hour of sleight-ofhand, food, and literacy edutainment.

Pecos – In ProRodeo, there are just some trophies that cowboys are eager to show off. Obviously, the most prestigious is the gold buckle, awarded each year to that season’s world champions.

The summer reading program opened on May 20, the theme this year is “Adventures Begin at Your Library”. The program kicked off on June 6 with the illusionist “Artist of the Impossible”. Children will receive a welcome packet and incentives during the program. Each child who completes the program will be eligible to attend the movie “Migration” at the movie theatre. The program is available to all children in Pecos County at no cost. Please come to the library to register and obtain details.

The Fort Stockton Community Theatre has received a $30,000 grant from The Rea Charitable Trust to fund programs through 2024. The Rea Charitable Trust last awarded a grant to FSCT in 2018 during the capital campaign to build the new Nelson Street Theatre and remodel the old theatre into the FMH Meeting Hall. That building campaign was completed in less than five years, thanks to other grantors, business and individual donors, and government agency support.

Texas A&M University in College Station held a four-day veterinary science camp. According to Fort Stockton High School student JJ Montoya, out of hundreds of applicants, only 40 students were chosen for the 15-18-year-old age group.
