Runoff elections feature local race
This year’s primary runoff election on May 24 will feature one local race in Fort Stockton.
Republicans Darla Cude and Tammy Lujan are the two candidates vying for the District Clerk seat. With no candidates running on the Democratic side, the winner will claim the seat once the November election is concluded.
The District Clerk race was the lone contested race this past fall with three candidates vying for one nomination – meaning that the winner needed to get 50% of the vote plus one to secure the nomination without a runoff election.
Darla Cude received 41.2% of the votes (558), Tammy Lujan received 31.1% of the votes (422), and Sylvia Guerra received 374 votes (27.6%) in this past March’s primary to force the runoff.
Early voting in the May 24 primary runoff elections ends Friday, May 20. Under state law, voters who cast ballots in either party’s primary election must vote only in the same party’s runoff election. Voters who did not cast ballots in the primary may vote in either party’s runoff election.
Topping the runoff ballots are runoff elections for attorney general. Incumbent Republican Ken Paxton faces George P. Bush, the current land commissioner. On the Democratic side, former Galveston mayor Joe Jaworski faces Rochelle Garza, a Brownsville civil rights attorney.
There are also statewide runoff races for lieutenant governor, land commissioner, comptroller and railroad commissioner, as well as several congressional seats and spots on the state board of education. See the full list of runoff races at: https://tinyurl.com/43bzf9v6.
No results differ with official election tally
Going into last week there were two election results that had the potential to change by way of ballots that needed to be corrected and mail-in ballots that were required to be postmarked by May 7.
Fort Stockton ISD Bond Proposition A needed four votes to swing from fail to pass status.
Six more votes were tallied last week – all of which were against Proposition A. The final vote tally for the proposition was 665 (against) and 656 (for).
FSISD School Board Ward 2 Trustee also had the potential to change with Freddie Martinez having a one vote lead (54-53) over Felix Rodriguez. The tally stayed the same in the official results.
Election results for the school district will be canvassed on May 18.
