In 1927, V.T. Hamlin was working as a poster designer and mapmaker for the oil industry in Iraan. He was stationed in the Yates Field, one of the largest oil fields in the Permian Basin. During this time, he thought about the dinosaurs and other ancient creatures who once roamed the area, and created the comic strip character Alley Oop.

4 SERVINGS • 3 cups uncooked farfalle (bow-tie) pasta (6 ounces) • 2 cups cubed cooked turkey breast • ½ cup pesto • ½ cup coarsely chopped roasted red bell peppers • ½ cup sliced ripe olives, if desired Cook pasta as directed on package in three-quart saucepan. Drain.

March 3, 1983 issue: Easy Does It - Barton Miller, age six, skates “carefully” around Apache Bowl A-Rink, not caring he was the youngest skater in the “Superskate” Monday, sponsored by the Fort Stockton Jaycee Women. Barton, a kindergarten student at Alamo Elementary School, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Miller, had nine pledges the day of the event. Now the 21 skaters who participated are out collecting their pledges to be turned in Saturday, March 12, all for benefit of St. Judge Children’s Research Hospital.

FSISD keeps mask mandate

The Fort Stockton Independent School District will keep a mask mandate is place at all their campuses for the rest of the school year according to FSISD Assistant Superintendent Gil-Rey Madrid. Madrid said at Thursday’s COVID-19 update with the Fort Stockton Pioneer on March 11 that the Texas Education Association met with school administrators the previous week after Abbott’s executive order, stating that schools need to keep mask mandates in place.
