Leaders from the Texas House and Senate have agreed on an $8 billion school funding package, which is being called the largest in state history, The Dallas Morning News reported. The latest version of House Bill 2 was unveiled at a Senate hearing Thursday.

The Borderlands Research Foundation has named J. Luther King, Jr., as the 2025 West Texas Conservationist of the Year, honoring his decadeslong commitment to land stewardship and wildlife conservation across Texas. King was recognized during a special event held April 17 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote this week on a sweeping legislative package that includes major federal spending cuts—among them, approximately $625 billion in reductions to Medicaid and $300 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps.

The Rotary Club of Fort Stockton announced Thursday it will sponsor four local high school students to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Camp this summer in Torreon, New Mexico. Selected to represent Fort Stockton at Camp RYLA are Daniel “Cody” Schoenfeldt, Jasmine Tijerina, Madalyn Gomez and Daniel Perez.

The Fort Stockton Community Theatre will present the musical Sanders Family Christmas beginning Friday, May 30, with a special Dinner Theatre performance scheduled for Saturday, May 31. Tickets for the Dinner Theatre show, which features a surf-and-turf meal catered by Rem-RacRam, are available for $40 per person and must be purchased by noon on Tuesday, May 27.

Oscar Gonzalez, a longtime member of the Fort Stockton Lions Club and dedicated public servant, was recognized as a Legacy Lion at the District 2T3 Awards Ceremony for his nearly 50 years of service. A proud Lions Club member since 1975, Gonzalez has been a cornerstone of the Fort Stockton community, actively supporting the club’s service initiatives.

Raymond Glen (R.G. “Real Good”) (Pawpaw) Decker passed away Wednesday, May 14, in his home in Alpine, Texas. He will be truly missed. Born in Dallas, Texas to Lois and Elmer W. Decker, on January 28, 1950.

Francisco Ramirez Velasco, Jr., age 86 from Ft. Stockton, entered eternal life on May 18.
