Families across Pecos County have a new reason to celebrate this holiday season. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, an internationally recognized literacy program that has provided millions of free children’s books across the globe, officially launched in the region on Thursday.

This fall, The University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Astronomy welcomed the inaugural class of postdoctoral fellows to its Cosmic Frontier Center. The Frontier Fellows will support the center, which launched earlier this year, in its mission to uncover the origins of galaxies in the universe through a combination of theoretical and observational astrophysics.

Phelan drops bid for speaker; no clear winner yet

House Speaker Dade Phelan withdrew last week from seeking another term leading that chamber. After three rounds of voting on Saturday, state Rep. David Cook, R-Mansfield emerged as the preference of most House Republicans. However, his opponent, state Rep. Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, claims to have enough support from both Republicans and Democrats to clear the 76-vote threshold.
