May 12, 1977 issue: HEADED FOR THE FINALS . . . Fort Stockton’s mile relay quartet will compete in the Texas schoolboy track finals in Austin this weekend, running against the cream of the 3A crop. The Panthers have posted a 3:20.8 as their best mark this season. The quartet of Wayne Jefferson, Greg Clark (front row, l-r) and Danny Dixon and Joel Garza (back, l-r) finished third in a state qualifiers meet at Lubbock on Saturday with a clocking of 3:21.0. Ned Allen (back right) is the alternate. Dixon will also compete in the state finals of the 330 intermediate hurdles. He qualified with a second place finish behind Garrell Baker of Perryton in regionals.

‘Return to Giant’ coming to Marfa

Twenty-five years ago a documentary premiered at SXSW that showed what it was like to be on the set of the Warner Bros. classic, “Giant,” with James Dean and Rock Hudson in Marfa. That summer of 1955 went on to inspire a stage play a film, and a TV series.

Lions Club scholarship recipients

The Iraan-Sheffield Independent School District held its award ceremony on May 7 in the high school auditorium. Seniors were presented with academic and scholarship awards. The Valedictorian and Salutatorian were announced. At this ceremony, the Iraan-Sheffield Lions Club awarded their 2021 scholarships to seven seniors. The recipients are Mariela Santana, Rylie Cravens, Yanissa Hernandez, Linda Rodriguez, Javier Hernandez, Gavin Aguirre and Jesus Perez. Congratulations Class of 2021 and God speed. Courtesy Photo

Lilah Smith Safe House

The Lilah Smith Safe House held a ribbon cutting ceremony outside the Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce office on Tuesday, May 11. The organization, which separated from the Crisis Center of West Texas in 2019, became its own agency – First Response Ministry Inc. – on March 2, 2019 and serves Pecos County and surrounding counties. Lilah Smith Safe House is a nonprofit organization that provides a safe haven, shelter and educates to end domestic and sexual violence in West Texas. Courtesy Photo

Amtrak platform ribbon cutting

You are cordially invited to attend ribbon cutting event for Amtrak’s new wheelchair accessible boarding platform and waiting area here in Sanderson. Construction is complete and we are excited to welcome travelers to board “Texas Eagle” or “Sunset Limited” The Platform is 8” above the top of the rail. A lift or ramp is required to board when one is using a wheelchair. The car attendant/conductor handles the lift (in a small building on the platform) or ramps which are onboard the coaches.
