The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) has received official approval from the National Science Foundation (NSF) confirming that the observatory will advance into its Major Facilities Final Design Phase, one of the final steps before becoming eligible for federal construction funding. This critical milestone recognizes the Giant Magellan’s scientific merit, construction progress, and alignment with U.S. priorities in science and technology.

Fort Stockton 14U Girls Represent with Heart at Texas West State Tournament

The Fort Stockton 14U Junior Softball Team wrapped up an unforgettable All-Star run last week at the Texas West State Tournament in Abilene. Representing District 37 and Section 1 with pride, this talented and determined group of athletes gave it their all in three competitive games, capping off a stellar summer season with the titles of District and Section Champions and a final record of 5–2.

Yankees Rally for the Win

The Fort Stockton Recreation Minor League Baseball season came to a thrilling close last week as the Yankees pulled off a dramatic comeback to win the City Championship Tournament. After a weather delay that pushed the tournament back from its original May 22 start date, league play resumed on July 8 and wrapped up with seven final games, culminating in a championship showdown between the undefeated Yankees, coached by Lorenzo Hayes, and the Royals, led by Ruben Bernal.

Cowboys Take Series Over Garden City Before Falling to Roswell

The Alpine Cowboys added a hardearned series win to their resume last Tuesday, edging out the Garden City Wind 5-4 at Clint Lightner Stadium. Behindacommandingperformancefrom starting pitcher Jacob Bradley and clutch offense, Alpine sealed the rubber match of the three-game series before heading to Roswell, where they would struggle through a tough three-game stretch against the Invaders.

Fort Stockton City Council Celebrates Departing Member

The Fort Stockton City Council convened Monday evening for its regular meeting at City Hall, where members addressed a range of items, including the departure of one of their members. The council formally accepted the resignation of Paul Jerome Chavez from his position on the Fort Stockton City Council.

July 9th, a Wednesday morning, Fort Stockton gathered under solemn skies to honor the life of Jaime Morales—a U.S. Marine, beloved son, and familiar face across town—who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run on July 1.
Loved ones gathered to lay Jaime Morales to rest. The service included full military honors from the United States Marine Corps, a solemn final salute for a life taken too soon. Taps echoed through the air as family and friends said goodbye. Jaime was killed in a hit-and-run on July 1, a case that remains under investigation. Maria Consolacion Vasquez

Maria Consolacion (Connie) Vasquez passed away peacefully on June 15, surrounded by loved ones. Connie was born on September 2, 1932 in Fort Stockton, Texas, to Tomacita Ramos Gonzales and Saturnino L. Gonzales. Connie lived a life marked by love, family and strength. She was married to Joe D. Vasquez for 70 years until his passing in March 2017. Together they raised 6 children and built a life full of family dedication. Connie shared a special relationship with her husband Joe who brought her love, kindness and years of companionship. She was happiest during family gatherings filled with laughter, chatting around the kitchen table or cooking large holiday meals. Connie greatly enjoyed working with the Dr. Boon Medical Clinic for over 13 years. She made her community stronger by volunteering for St. Joseph’s Church as a Guadalupana (serving meals for parishioners) for over 25 years. Connie was also an avid fundraiser for her children’s school activities.
