When Fort Stockton voters chose to become a home-rule charter city last November, they voted for more control of city government, including elections. And with the May 6 municipal election complete, city residents will get to see part of what they voted for in action.

County honors FSHS dual enrollment graduate

When Midland College holds its commencement ceremonies on Friday, one of the graduates receiving her degree will not have even graduated high school, yet. Fort Stockton High School senior Rylea Jackson has been taking classes at Midland College in addition to her studies at FSHS and will graduate Friday with an Associate of Arts Degree in General Studies, walking with the Fort Stockton High School Class of 2023, one week later.

Margaret C. Dominguez, 84, of Fort Stockton, Texas passed away May 6, 2023, in McCamey, Texas.  

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 10, 2023, from 12-7 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home of the Big Bend 301 N. Main St. Fort Stockton, Texas. There will be a rosary recited Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at 7 p.m. also at Heritage Funeral Home of the Big Bend. Funeral mass will be Thursday, May 11, 2023, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church 403 S. Main St. Fort Stockton, with Father Francis Njoku officiating. Interment will follow funeral mass.

District approves calendar

Efficiency is the name of the game at the Fort Stockton Independent School District, and the FSISD school board on April 26 approved the campus calendars for the 2023-24 school year to include a 4-and-a-half-day school week for middle and high school students. The idea is to allow school staff more conference, tutoring and training time.

‘Honky Tonk Hissy Fit’ set

The cast of Fort Stockton Community Theatre’s upcoming comedy, “Honky Tonk Hissy Fit,” written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten and directed by Alice Duerksen is preparing for performances Friday, May 12, through Wednesday, May 17, at The Nelson Street Theatre. Evening performances are at 7 p.m., and the Sunday Mother’s Day matinee (Moms get in free!) will be at 2 p.m. Doors will open 30 minutes before curtain.

House OKs $4.5 billion for teacher pay raises

The Texas House last Thursday passed two education- related bills, one that allocates $4.5 billion for teacher pay raises and another to increase the annual per-student base funding from $6,160 to $6,300 – a 2.3% increase.

National Correctional Officer Week May 7-13 The title of Correctional Officer is one that is often overlooked or simply forgotten when Law Enforcement Agencies are mentioned among the public. Former President Ronald Reagan recognized this and saw a need to thank those individuals who’ve chosen the profession of Corrections throughout the nation.
