SRSU announces La Frontera STEM Research Institute

An education research program that investigates digital innovation and future-ready STEM teaching at Sul Ross State University has been officially named.

The La Frontera STEM Research Institute will have offices on all four SRSU campuses in Alpine, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, and Uvalde.

Panther tennis dominates Saturday home match

With the final district match looming on Oct. 5, the Fort Stockton High School tennis team dominated a Saturday home Match against Compass taking down the Cougars, 15-4. 

“The team came out ready to play and wanting to win,” said head coach Victor Garcia. 

After being swept by Pecos, the girls team was ready for a little redemption. The ladies swept the doubles side and split the singles to go 6-3 on the day. 

The Panther boys followed up a perfect day against Pecois with a 9-0 day against

Fort Stockton cross country competes in Big Spring

Body

The Fort Stockton High School cross country team competed Saturday at the Big Spring Invitational, with several runners recording strong performances. 

In Division 1 high school boys, Juan Vela finished second with a time of 18 minutes 2 seconds, while Jesus Hernandez ran18:44 for seventh place.. Aryan Hernandez was 17th in 19:56 and Diego Ronquillo was 19th in 20:07 as the team placed second to Andrews. 

In the high school boys Division 2, Jose Aguilar, Khalil Jackson, Jose Sarabia and Ezekiel Soto ran well for the Panthers.

Virginia “Jinnie” Winn Jackson Drennan

Virginia “Jinnie” Winn Jackson Drennan passed away peacefully on Oct. 1, 2022, in Granbury surrounded by her family. She was 78 years old and loved for her kindness, her lively spirit, her beautiful smile, and her master elementary teacher organization and work ethic.

Capital Highlights: State sends resources to Florida

Texas has deployed state resources to Florida to assist in response and recovery efforts in the aftermath of the devastation caused last week by Hurricane Ian, one of the most powerful storms to hit the United States in the past decade.

“Texans understand the urgency of hurricane disaster response and recovery efforts, and our state is swiftly sending more support and resources to Florida as they continue responding to Hurricane Ian,” Gov. Greg Abbott said.

Just days short of her 97th birthday, Maggie Smith ended a long, exciting, and rewarding life. Born to parents Earl and Josephine Autry, Maggie grew up in East Texas, and graduated from Marquez High School in 1943. After a brief time in Houston, Texas, Maggie married Dallas Smith in 1947, and moved to Ralls, Texas.
