DPS to increase patrol Aug. 19 to Sept. 5

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will be increasing the number of Texas Highway Patrol (THP) Troopers on the roads from Friday, Aug. 19, through Monday, Sept. 5, as part of the Intoxicated Driving Mobilization (IDM) Specific Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). DPS troopers will be on the roads looking for drivers who are speeding, driving while intoxicated or not wearing their seat belts. The goal of the IDM STEP program is to reduce the number of DWIrelated crashes, injuries and fatalities. DPS offers the following safety tips for people driving during the Labor

City of Fort Stockton helps with West Texas Food Bank

XC preview: Fort Stockton returns district’s top runners

If you haven’t bought stock in the Fort Stockton cross country program, no better time than the present to invest.

Junior Ali Jackson and senior Fabian Perez are the on-paper favorites to garner district crowns this fall, and the highly decorated duo will be joined by the team’s No. 3 and No. 2 runners from a season ago in Natalie Molinar and Juan Vela.

The Fort Stockton cross country team are known as early risers, practicing before the sun comes up every morning (5:15-6 a.m.). This year’s teams are as follows, varsity boys: Fabian Perez, Juan Vela, Jesus Hernandez, Diego Ronquillo, Ezekiel Soto. Varsity girls: Ali Jackson, Summer Hinojos, Natalie Molinar, Paulina Hernandez, Arissa Jimenez. Mateo “Popo” M. Gonzalez, Jr.

Mateo Popo” M. Gonzalez, Jr., 94, passed away on Aug. 11, 2022.  He was born in Fort Stockton, Texas, on Jan. 31, 1928, to Mateo Gonzalez, Sr., and Seferina M. Gonzalez. 

Many years of his life were dedicated to his passion as a rancher/cowboy. After retiring from ranching, Mateo and his family moved to the city where he learned the skill of welding. He was a self-employed welder when he eventually retired from work in his 80s.
