Prowlers JV 47 Pecos 17

The Fort Stockton girls basketball junior varsity squad put forth one of their most dominant performances of the season on Jan. 21 in a district showdown at Pecos.

The outing was a prime example of a team effort as 14 of the team’s 16 players were able to score at least one point in the 47-17 win for Fort Stockton.

“It’s great to bounce back and end the first half of district with a victory. Overall, this shows the level of depth that this JV squad really has,” coach Sera Ramirez said. “We’ve got to get back into the gym and gear up for the second half of the season. It will definitely be a nice test for these young athletes.”

Yvette Lopez led all scorers with 10 points and Priscilla Trevino followed with six.

Janean Gonzalez and Krysten Zuniga tied for the third-highest point total for the Prowlers with four points apiece.

Pecos 47 Panthers JV 41

The junior varsity Panthers got off to a slow start in Friday’s matchup against Pecos and found themselves trailing through the entire contest, eventually falling to the Eagles 47-41.

Johan Mireles and Bryson Castro tied for a team-high eight points apiece.

Three Panthers scored six points each in Isaiah Velasquez, Kye Norman and AJ Granado.

Converting at the free throw line can be a critical difference in a game when teams are closely matched on the basketball court.

For the Prowlers, their performance at the charity stripe proved to be the difference in a 51-30 home loss on Jan. 25 to the Lady Loboes.

Fort Stockton missed over 15 free throws and came up short as a result.

“Missing more than 15 free throws is rough. It determines a game most times and I think we would have been in the game had we made some free throws,” coach Sera Ramirez said. “It’s been a rough year with COVID and injuries, but we will get through this rough patch.”

Zuniga led Fort Stockton in scoring with six points and Estrella Aguilar added five.

The Prowlers are set to travel to Seminole on Friday, Dec. 28. Game times are set for 4:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
