Traffic jams are rare in Fort Stockton, but that doesn’t mean we don’t share the road with some slow pokes. Desert box turtles have been crossing busy streets here in town, and many of their attempts have resulted in their own demise.
Desert box turtles in particular are known to become active in summer, so it’s currently the season of their clumsy road crossings.
The western ornate box turtle has become a protected species in some locations, but not here in the Trans-Pecos. Just be careful for them anyway. Running over them is a turtle disaster.
