Prowlers upset Mustangs to end 2023 campaign

Their best was saved for last.

In their season finale at Andrews on Tuesday, the Prowlers softball team stunned the district runner-up Mustangs with a 17-hit offensive showcase.

Fort Stockton maintained the lead for all seven innings of the contest and held off a Mustang seventh-inning rally to secure a 12-10 victory.

Senior Adree Bueno, junior Ivanna Ortiz, and sophomore Mia Garcia led the Prowlers with three hits apiece, highlighted by Garcia’s solo home run in the fourth inning.

Aryanna Gonzalez and Sophia Hernandez added two hits apiece.

The Prowlers pieced together their most productive first inning of district play at the plate as Fort Stockton batters recorded six consecutive hits in the frame to take a 4-1 advantage after one inning of play.

Garcia began the first inning hit streak with a single, followed by a Gonzalez single, Kriselda Porras double, Bueno single, Aubrie Salgado single, and Hernandez single.

After extending their lead to 6-1 in the second inning, Andrews narrowed their deficit to 6-4 in the third inning via three Prowler errors.

Garcia’s dinger in the fourth made it a 7-4 game before the Prowlers plated five runs in the fifth inning.

Bueno, Hernandez, Ortiz, Gonzalez, and Dmya Vaughn each tallied a hit in the frame. Porras and Garcia found their way to the basepath via Mustang errors.

Andrews added four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, narrowing their deficit to 12-8, and scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh frame to end the game.

Bueno, who pitched the final two innings, struck out one Andrews batter in the ninth.

Fort Stockton’s defense secured the remaining outs via two flyballs.

Porras started on the mound for the Prowlers and allowed five hits, four walks, and one earned run in 3 1/3 innings.

Gonzalez tossed 1 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, and four earned runs.

Bueno tallied two strike outs and allowed two hits and a walk.

Fort Stockton finished in fifth place in their district with a 3-7 record against district foes.

Monahans routs Fort Stockton

The Prowlers suffered their largest defeat of the season on April 14 in a 26-2 loss to Monahans on Senior Night.

The Lady Loboes ended the game with four home runs, including a grand slam by Mia Matta, and 22 hits in the five inning contest.

Fort Stockton committed more errors (6) than hits recorded (4) during the defeat.

Monahans turned a 4-0 lead in the first into a 16-0 advantage by the time the top of the second inning concluded.

In 10 district games this season, Fort Stockton was outscored 111-64 and committed 30 errors.

Leading the Prowlers at the plate during district play was Bueno, Porras, and Garcia. For players with at least 20 plate appearances, Bueno led the team in in batting average against district opponents with a .484 mark. Porras was second at .433 and Garcia ended with a .412 average.

Bueno also was the team’s leading pitcher in district play, recording a team-low 3.88 ERA in nine innings pitched over the course of four games.
