The Fort Stockton freshman team claimed their fourth consecutive victory on Jan. 24 against Monahans, maintaining their perfect record against district competition on their home floor.

Christian Soto scored a game-high 12 points in Fort Stockton’s 51-38 victory over the Loboes. Evan Cordero contributed 10 points for the Panthers on Tuesday.

Fort Stockton freshman coach Richard Rojas credited his team’s defense for their success against Monahans.

“Our defensive pressure was amazing. Gamma Corral, Jondry Reyes, and Bryan Encinas did a great job applying pressure,” Rojas said.

The Panthers won their first two district games against Pecos and Andrews by an average of 34.5 points.

On Jan. 21, the Fort Stockton freshman team downed the Eagles 72-29 behind a trio of double-digit scoring performances.

Adric Gallegos led the Panthers with 11 points while Ejay Ortiz and Ayden Villarreal tallied 10 apiece.

Defense was once again the focal point of Rojas’ praise for his unit.

“Corral, Brandon Ureste and Encinans played great on defense,” he said. “I am very proud of our defensive effort. The boys played with great energy and intensity.”

On Jan. 18, the Panthers routed Andrews 68-42 – the only Fort Stockton unit at the high school level to beat the Mustangs.

The Panthers jumped out to a 24 – 8 first-quarter lead and never looked back in the 26-point victory. Leading the Panthers in scoring were Soto, Corral, and Cordero with 11 points each

Encinas scored eight points and Adric Gallegos finished with seven.

“Jondry Reyes did an awesome job of running the offense. Kael Rojero was all over the court on defense,” Rojas said.

Fort Stockton has now outscored their opponents 642-380 this season.

The freshman team takes a 9-2 record into Friday’s game on Jan. 28 at Seminole.
