Jesse Turner (Tobe) McWhorter Jr. loving husband, father, grandpa, brother and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, in his home in Llano, Texas. Jess was born in Graham, Texas on May 30, 1949, to Jesse Tobe McWhorter and Marie (Pumroy) McWhorter. Jess and his younger brother Joe grew up and attended high school in Ft. Stockton. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy. He married the love of his life Phyllis Walker shortly after.

Upon completion of his military obligation, he attended Sul Ross State University and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and a master’s in educational leadership. His career as an educator spanned over 35 years serving districts in El Paso, Crane and Llano. He was an amazing coach and instructor.

Jess was known as a math “wiz” and not only taught mathematics in the classroom, but often tutored struggling students outside of school. He was very proud to retire from Crane ISD as the Middle School Principal but didn’t stay retired for long; he found himself, once again, teaching math at Llano High School. Finally, in 2014 he actually retired. Jess and Phyllis built a life filled with love and laughter with their three children Tiffany, Katy, and Tate. Jess was a good Christian family man, who brought his children up in the church and always enjoyed taking his family on many memorable vacations. One of the family’s favorite winter pastimes was the family ski trips. Summers were spent fishing and skiing on the lake and just spending quality time together. Jess never missed one activity that his children were involved in. Jess was a proud grandpa and great grandpa. He always supported his grandchildren in a way that not many kids get to experience. The grandchildren turned to him for advice. He spent many hours-on-end traveling to football, basketball and volleyball games, track meets, school plays, band concerts, wakeboarding competitions, rodeos, tee ball and Boy Scout derbies. Grandpa was always there supporting his grandchildren with the biggest smile in the crowd. Jess was a man of many passions including riding his motorcycle, playing golf and watching Texas high school football games. He loved everything about the sport and even refereed for many years. But his special gift was for serving the Lord. Jess gave his testimony freely and was truly a man of God. He devoted his life to spreading the Word and helping his fellow man in whatever way he could. One of his favorite missions was the work of the Gideons. He enjoyed handing out Bibles at college campuses and other locations. He was always sharing his love for Christ. For 36 years he served as a deacon in several churches, and for 47 years he faithfully taught Sunday School. Jess will be missed by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis. His children: Tiffany and husband Greg Hubenak, Katy and husband Charles Huebner, Tate and wife Jami McWhorter; His precious grandchildren: Ayden Hubenak, Kelbey Huebner, Avery Hubenak, Kolden Huebner, Jaymeson, Jaxson and Joslynn McWhorter and greatgrand- daughter Kynsleigh Huebner, and brother Joe McWhorter; As well as brother and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many, many friends. Services took place Saturday November 19, 2022 with visitation from 12-1 p.m. and service at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 107 W. Luce St. in Llano, Texas.
