Jean-Michel Fabien Duforat was called home on Feb. 12, 2024. He passed peacefully in Bordeaux, France, surrounded by family and friends who never left his side. It was this city where he was born to Roger and Florentina Duforat in 1961. Years later he would move to America and become a resident of Fort Stockton, Texas.

Michel was a man of many talents. With a keen intellect and abounding ambition, he started a few businesses that he worked tirelessly to build. Our friend eventually became the General Manager at Mesa Vineyards, a perfect fit for his savvy expertise. While overseeing operations, he personally assisted in the development of a signature wine named “Rays” that was enjoyed by many.

Afterward, he became the proud owner of “Michel’s Place” located at the Grey Mule Saloon. Michel initiated and was involved in a number of fundraisers and community events throughout the years. Although Michel had numerous respected accomplishments and achievements, none were so great in his eyes than his own children. More than a loving father, Michel was an active one. Through his displays of involvement and devotion, he was committed to being a present role in their lives. Whether it were a mountain top or a valley, Michel would faithfully offer wisdom, kindness, and encouragement to both family and friends.

Our dear friend was well-known in town. A great many will remember his quick wit and sense of humor. Even more can recall his generosity and giving heart. Michel was the type who would give open-handedly without expectation. A man who would offer the last of what he had to someone in need. Many locals will fondly look back on the times spent together in good conversation over a drink. He was the kind of company that made troubles seem like a light breeze, just passing through. Michel held himself in every situation with dignity and integrity. His stoic strength and humble walk were a testament to his unparalleled character.

When Michel had time to spare, he could be found gardening, fishing, and cooking elaborate meals for loved ones. His life was lived with the simple message, “Love Does.” We can honor his legacy by echoing his example.

Jean-Michel Duforat was preceded in death by his loving parents. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Anne Duforat, as well as his former wife, Vikki Duforat, his four children Heather Young, Christopher Duforat, Miranda Like, Sandra Duforat, and eight grandchildren.

The family would like to welcome you to the funeral services on March 9. Mingle and Memorial will be held at Northside Church, 1600 North Gillis Street, at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively. The graveside service will commence at East Hill Cemetery at 3 p.m., followed by food served in the Northside fellowship hall. At 6pm the Grey Mule Saloon will host those who would like to come together and celebrate Michel’s life at his favorite place.
