A Fort Stockton man found dead Saturday morning on a roadway inside of city limits was believed to have been killed in a hit-and-run incident, according to the Fort Stockton Police Department.

FSPD identified the man on Tuesday as 52-year-old Rogelio Martinez Leyva, who was a resident of Fort Stockton.

Leyva’s body was found near the intersection of East 10th St. and Park Street, a roadway behind the Budget Inn hotel, around 11:46 a.m. on April 1.

Fort Stockton Police Chief Ernesto Velasquez said that the initial autopsy report revealed that a vehicle striking Leyva likely caused his death.

“We do not have the final autopsy results. We have the preliminary results. They indicate he was struck by a vehicle we believe,” he said. “Our investigation is leading us to believe that he was hit by a vehicle and at this point in time we’re still conducting an investigation, so it’s still ongoing. We’re looking for more leads and hopefully we can find who struck Mr. Leyva.”

Velasquez stated that motorists driving by the area reported the incident and when authorities arrived shortly thereafter, Leyva had succumbed to his injuries.

“We believe that the people that located him located him pretty quick. He wasn’t unattended there for very long,” he said.

No witnesses have come forward with information regarding Leyva’s death as of Tuesday afternoon.

“We’re trying to follow any leads and continue investigation, tracking timeframes and timelines. Hopefully we can piece it together,” Velasquez said. “Right now, there are no witnesses that know what happened.”

Velasquez added that the final autopsy report will likely be completed in the coming weeks.

This is a developing story and will further be reported on in the Pioneer when more information is made available.
