Blue Wave members compete in Monahans
On Saturday, 21 Fort Stockton Blue Wave swim team members traveled to Monahans to compete in the Monahans Invitational swim meet.
Ten teams from around the area traveled to Monahans for the meet. The teams included 4A schools Abilene Wylie, Amarillo Caprock, Andrews, Big Spring, Fort Stockton, Monahans, and Pecos and 5A schools Hobbs and San Angelo Central Blue and Orange teams.
The meet followed the standard order of High School boys and girls swimming and diving events.
The Fort Stockton swimmers who competed in Monahans were seniors Jordan Oglesby, Andrew Ureta, Kyle Wardlow, and Chelsie Woodward; juniors Max Galindo, Megan Ramirez, Jenny Reyes, and Paul Rojas; sophomores Dominick Jackson, Juanita Martinez, Ricardo Mendoza, Jorge Sanchez, Sabrina Santos, and Sophia Sparks; and freshmen Michelle Cervantes Baily Cox, Javier Mendoza, Natasha Ortiz, Sarah Ramirez, Kara Tyree and Alexis Villarreal.
Many individuals and relay teams brought home ribbons. In the relay events, Fort Stockton entered a total of eight relay teams with six relays scoring points for the team.
The boys 200 medley relay team of Jackson, Oglesby, Wardlow and Ureta placed seventh out of 15 relays with a time of 2 minutes, 4.27 seconds. The girls 200 yard medley relay team of Ramirez, Martinez, Woodward and Reyes swam a 2:36.42 placing 12th.
The boys 400 yard freestyle relay "A" team of Oglesby, Wardlow, Mendoza and Ureta placed eighth with a time 4:00.68. The boys 400 relay "B" team of Galindo, Sanchez, Javier Mendoza and Rojas swam a 5:00.20.
The girls 400 "A" relay team of Reyes, Martinez, Cox and Woodward placed 10th with the time of 5:06.84. The 400 "B" relay team of Tyree, Cervantes, Santos and Ramirez swam a 6:00.86.
The girls 200 yard freestyle "A" team of Ortiz, Santos, Tyree and Cox swam a 2:27.76. The boys 200 yard freestyle "A" team of Jackson, Galindo, Rojas and R. Mendoza swam a 2:01.56.
Other exciting moments came when Ureta swam to a fourth place finish in the boys 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.83 and seventh in the 100 freestyle (57.24).
Other top places in individual events included Martinez placing ninth in the girls 200 Yard IM (3:19.81); Wardlow placing ninth in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:09.26, and 12th in the boys 50 free (26.11); Oglesby placing 12th in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:11.09, and ninth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:20.70); and M. Ramirez placing 12th in the girls 100 yard backstroke (1:33.41).
Other outstanding individual swims included Reyes in the girls 200 yard freestyle; Woodward, Cox, Ortiz, Tyree, Cervantes and S. Ramirez in the girls 50 yard freestyle; R. Mendoza, Jackson, Rojas, Sanchez, Galindo and J. Mendoza in the boys 50 yard freestyle; Woodward, Reyes, Cox, Santos, Tyree, Cervantes and S. Ramirez in the girls 100 yard freestyle; R. Mendoza, Rojas, Sanchez, Galindo and J. Mendoza in the boys 100 yard freestyle; Jackson in the boys 100 yard backstroke; and M. Ramirez in the girls 100 yard breaststroke.
"The Monahans Invitational swim meet was a successful meet for the Blue wave team members competing against the 5A schools," Fort Stockton coach Cathy Havins said. "The Blue Wave swim team members gained ground in the 4A district and regional time and team battles. The FSHS team members swam through injuries and illness during the meet.
"(I) and coach Soto would like to thank the parents and friends that traveled to Monahans to support the team."
The next meet will be a Tri-Meet between Monahans, Pecos and Fort Stockton on Dec. 4 in Monahans. On Dec. 12-13, the Blue Wave team members will compete in the Aqua Tribe Invitational in Seminole.
